The Budget for Control 2 Will Be Lower Than That of Alan Wake 2.
Published 9 May 2025
Remedy Entertainment has officially confirmed that Control 2, its upcoming single-player title, is being developed with a smaller budget compared to 2023’s Alan Wake 2. Despite the reduced funding, the studio remains confident in its ability to deliver another high-quality experience. Expectations are high, especially after the critical success of both Control (2019) and Alan Wake 2, though the latter struggled to meet commercial expectations despite its acclaim.

Earlier this year, Remedy revealed that Alan Wake 2 only turned a profit 15 months after launch—a slower return than hoped for a high-budget, AAA game. With increasing industry costs, Remedy is adjusting its strategy to focus on financial sustainability. CEO Tero Virtala stated in an interview that Control 2 has a €50 million (approx. $57 million USD) budget, co-financed by Annapurna Interactive. The studio believes this more modest funding is sufficient to produce a top-tier game while remaining financially prudent.

Remedy expects Control 2 to break even with two million copies sold, with higher sales generating strong profits. This move is part of a broader shift from survival to long-term success, with the studio emphasizing smarter budgeting and realistic development timelines. While Control 2 is in full production, Remedy's next release is FBC: Firebreak, a co-op multiplayer spin-off launching June 17, 2025, on PlayStation Plus Extra and Xbox Game Pass—marking the studio’s first self-published title.
